Toast to My Life

My pandemic life has been a bit like a piece of toast. A piece of dry bread I chug down with a cup of tea every morning: nothing exciting and predictable, just like the repetitive days under lockdowns and COVID precautions. Days feel like slices of an endless loaf of bread. Or is life like this without the pandemic?

I made this toast out of a piece of wrapping paper I designed, and juxtaposed it with a self-portrait which I often draw. By making the toast bigger than my self-portrait, I tried to convey the reality of many artists who do commercial work—such as designing wrapping paper in my case—or work a day job to earn our daily bread and make “fine art” on the side.
